Potential Adopters
If interested in a particular animal, please email caawsmail@yahoo.com with your questions. Due to the large volume of calls that CAAWS receives on a daily basis and limited volunteer hours available, it is nearly impossible to return all calls. Email is the easiest and quickest way to reach us. The majority of our volunteers work or attend school full time and are unable to return calls during their work day, leaving very few evening hours available for all call returns. Thank you for your consideration.

Patch

My siblings and I used to be goldfish - or at least that’s what our so-called owners thought. Our mom had a litter of 6 puppies and obviously the only logical thing to do was dump us and mom on a not-so-traveled road near a water-filled ditch. Thank goodness an angel happened our way because mom couldn’t make it on her own trying to keep all of us from falling in and drowning.

Well, we are all health and happy now and decided to trade in our fins for tails - we look cuter that way. I am a female Lab/Catahoula Leopard Dog mix born approximately 1/08. I am up to date on shots, spayed and current on heartworm prevention. Foster mom estimates that I will be about 50 lbs. full grown.

If you do not have any deep 'water filled' ditches near your home and need an addition to your family, I, or any of my siblings would love to join you.

Buttercup

Check out my video on YouTube.

I would like to start off by thanking Cindy Madere as my Best Buddy.

Now about me...
I am a female Chow born approximately July of 2000. I am up to date on shots, spayed and heartworm negative.

I might seem a little shy at first, but with a little encouragement, such as belly rubbings and scratches under the chin and behind the ears, I warm up very fast.

I would probably do better in a home without cats and small children. If you are looking to throw sticks, I won't fetch; looking to throw balls, I won't retrieve and return; but, if you are looking to give and receive some quiet lady like love, that I can do.

To learn more about me,  send me an email to

 caawsmail@yahoo.com to schedule a visit.

Kobe

Hey, Kobe here. Come a little closer, I've got something to tell you. I have a get rich quick scheme that I would like to share with you. "Adopt a dog, preferably me." You didn't think I was talking about money did you? That's just status.
I mean really rich and happy. A person that owns a dog, CORRECTION, loves a dog, lives longer and is wealthier than a person without a dog in its life.

I am a male lab mix born approximately April of 2005. I am up to date on shots, neutered and heartworm negative. I am an active guy who would love a jogging companion. I am intelligent, extremely energetic and would love an active family that loves life as much as I do.

Don't let my rambunctious personality fool you though, I can cuddle up on a lap and sleep just like a spoiled little poodle (I just need a little larger lap.)

Laverne

The name’s Laverne, and I’m a female Terrier/Lab mix born approximately 1/07.  I am up to date on shots, spayed and heartworm negative.
Here’s the scoop on me. Late one night, my previous people dumped my sister, Shirley, and me on the road because they decided they didn’t love us anymore. I don’t get it. What’s not to love.
We get along great with other dogs (especially with each other - in case you’re looking for two), cats and adults. We are very shy at first, so a home without small children would be best for us.
Anyway, since getting out of the car wasn’t an option, here we are – cute, sweet, loving and available. Everyone tells us we will not be that way for long (the available part of course) and I sure hope they are right.

Maxine

CAAWS would like to tell you a little about Maxine. She is too shy to talk right now, so we will be her voice. Maxine was found running on the side of the road hungry, scared and it was very obvious that the human race had failed her (on every occasion). When you are on your own every day and night, when it's hot or cold, sunny or rainy, and the only human contact available is one more mean person scatting you away or throwing things at you, you begin to not trust those with two legs.

But CAAWS is going to show this young lady that despite everything she has learned from humans in the past, humans can be humane. She is making great strides in her foster home and is trusting humans once again. She gets along with other dogs, but thinks that cats would make great chew toys, so she needs a house with no cats. Quick movements still scare her so she needs a home with NO children.

She is up to date on shots, spayed and has completed heartworm treatment (4/17/06). Maxine is a female Shepherd mix who was born approximately 3/04. Are you the right person for Maxine? Can you be what she needs and deserves? Are you patient and understanding, loving and caring? When she sees that she is able to live without being hurt, some lucky family will be smothered with unconditional love.

Thor

Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen! Introducing in the black and tan corner, standing approximately 40 inches tall, weighing in at 80 lbs., a male German Shepherd, up to date on shots, neutered and tested heartworm negative, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana . . . THOR!

Boy, after an introduction like that how could anyone not want to have me on their team. I’m a very strong man who is going to need a very experienced owner. I’m very sweet, loveable and love to give kisses, but don’t realize my size, so I will need to go to a home without small children, small dogs or cats for their safety.

I would love an owner that is active and would like to take me on daily walks/jogs before we curl up on the couch with a good dinosaur leg. I’m very smart and would like someone who would stimulate my brain. If you weigh more than double my weight, can keep this big sweetie in line and don’t mind me cleaning your face everyday, as they say in the boxing world, "LET’S GET IT ON!"

Emma

Hi, my name is Emma and I'm a female Weimaraner born in 2/08.

I'm up to date on shots, spayed and heartworm negative.

I'm going to need some security in the form of bodyguards. See, the way I figure it, I'm so beautiful, people will be falling all over themselves to pet and kiss me and I am just not going to be able to handle all the attention alone. So, I'm interviewing for a couple of bodyguards to be at my side 24/7 to make sure I'm not harassed. Small children seem to be a pet peeve of mine, so we'll have to make sure there are none of those around.

I, of course, am going to be very picky in my selection, so if you would be so kind as to come to CAAWS one Saturday and fill out an application, my people will let you know if you get the job. My last bodyguards failed me big time, since I seemed to always be escaping and running the streets and winding up in places that I didn't need to be. Oh, by the way, you aren't expecting to be paid are you?

Lila

Hi, my name is Lila and I’m a Powder- Puff Chinese Crested/Maltese mix.
My hair was long when I first came to CAAWS but it was so matted and stained that it was just easier to start all over but I will grow a long pretty coat and if somebody just keeps my face shaved, foster mom says I will be a real beauty.
Whatever I am, I’m cute as can be. I’m a natural blonde, with a gorgeous smile. I’m heartworm negative, spayed, up to date on shots and was born around 2/07. Even though  I’m very small (7.2 lbs.) don’t let my diminutive appearance fool you. Foster mom says I have a HUGE heart and the energy of a windhound.

My first family abandoned me when they moved. They left me alone in a yard with no food or water.
I was really scared but then a  nice lady heard me crying and brought me to CAAWS where everyone was fighting over who would get to foster me. Go figure. I didn’t get a whole lot of attention before so I’m a little late on learning some stuff- like walking on a leash and sit, stay stuff and pottying stuff, but foster mom says I’m coming along nicely if someone will just have the patience to work with me.

I really like playing with my foster sisters and brother and in my Hollywood movie life, a family with a big fenced yard and  another small dog would be great, but if I can’t have that, then a forever home with someone of my own to love would be just fine.   A home with no small children is best for me.

Keeper

When everything's coming your way, your probably in the wrong lane.

And boy was I in the wrong lane the other day. Cars were coming and going all around me and I did not know what to do.

Lucky for me this kind lady scooped me up and brought me to the safety of her home. She named me Keeper. As in "I'm a Keeper".

I'm a female Lab mix born approximately 5/1/08. I am up to date on shots, spayed and current on heartworm prevention. I get along great with kids, other dogs and cats.

I promise if you add me to your family, you'll fall in love with me.
Hugs and Kisses, Keeper!

Come by and see me, and prepare to fall in love.

Xander

Xander is in need of your thoughts and well wishes.  This sweet boy was diagnosed with a heart murmur and has tested high positive for heartworms.  He is starting heartworm treatment 7/21/08.  Treatment can be tough on a healthy dog, but it will so much harder for a dog with a heart murmur.  Heartworm treatment will be much more risky for poor Xander.

On top of his heart murmur and heartworms this sweet boy also has demodex, which he is being treated for.
After heartworm treatment Xander will be neutered which will once again be more complicated due to his heart murmur.  He will not be available for adoption until he is fully recovered.

This sweet boy and his brother were originally bought by a back yard breeder with the simple purpose to breed his whole life.  When it was discovered he had medical problems he was tossed into a high kill shelter.  He was then adopted for a while and kept in horrible conditions until  animal control seized him.
His brother was no where to be found when Xander was taken from his second owner.  CAAWS found out about his plight and we felt this dog deserved a chance at a wonderful life so he was rescued.  We will keep updating his progress.  Any donations to his care will be greatly appreciated.

Vivian

Hi! I am a female German Shepherd mix born approximately 1/00. I am up to date on shots, spayed and tested negative for heartworms.

I have been shifted around quite a bit in my life and would really like to unpack "for good" somewhere that I can call "home" with people I can call "family". I play well with most other dogs.

I am a sweet lady who would love nothing more than to cherish her owners, go for walks, watch a movie every Saturday night, share a bowl of low-fat popcorn (kind of on a diet) and give her owner kisses.

Mama

Hi, I'm Mama. Mama to Tiffany, Patch and Felicia and three other pups that have already found forever homes.

Our so-called previous owners decided to dump me and my newborn babies on a not-so-traveled road near a water-filled ditch. Thank goodness a kind lady found and rescued us because it was becoming very hard to keep all 6 of my babies from falling in the ditch and drowning since with no food, I was getting very weak.

Then, if that wasn't enough, once saved, I tested positive for heartworms. But it seems the kindness of this lady just never stops. She put me through heartworm treatment and now I'm as healthy as a horse, or at least as a Terrier/Lab mix should be

I'm spayed, up to date on shots and was born around 7/07.  I get along with other dogs and have a great disposition (so I'm told). I've put on some much needed weight, seen off three (so far) of my babies and have a temporary place to call home. Now, that's what I call a happy story

If you would like to help complete my biography that I'm writing, adopt me and it will then be a "Happy Ending".

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How big will the puppy be when it grows up?
A: A puppy generally reaches half its ideal adult weight at 4 months of age. Based on our experience, the CAAWS Counselors will have an educated guess on the final size of most puppies up for adoption. Most puppies we see end up weighing 35 to 55 pounds.

Q: Should my dog stay outside?
A: We recommend that a dog be housed inside if at all possible. A dog wishes to be maintained as part of the family unit, therefore it enjoys sleeping in the house. A dog does require at least 1-2 hours of play time outside each day.

Q: How should I potty train my dog?
A: We recommend crate training.

Q: Will I know if the dog I adopt has heartworms?
A: We will disclose all medical information we have on the adopted dog that we have. We will also provide general information on the treatment of heartworms if the dog you wish to adopt is heartworm positive.

Q: Why does my dog dig?
A: Chances are your dog is bored. Give your dog plenty of supervised play time to work off his energy without getting into trouble. If the dog can not be supervised, we recommend crate training the dog.

Q: How important is breed?
A: Most all dog breeds are good family pets that love children. Mixed breeds, such as most of our adoptees, have no in-bred characteristics, but display their nature readily. If you are looking for a pure bred dog, you should learn the behavioral traits of the breed.
