About CAAWS and Freeway |
| CAAWS wants to remind everyone that
Freeway is an example for all the other cats, kittens,
dogs and puppies who are discarded along busy streets
and highways, neighborhoods, and rarely traveled dirt
roads. The abandonment of a companion animal is
illegal. Anyone witnessing such an event should obtain
a license number and description of the vehicle, then
call the animal control center or sheriff's dept. in
your area. |
| CAAWS had no intention of
spotlighting this single kitten over all the other
homeless and abandoned animals in the area. Our shelter
and foster homes, along with other local groups, are
overflowing with pets who encountered similar abuse and
neglect in their lives. |
| Freeway understands that many people
want to adopt her, but she knows she will not be
available for adoption anytime soon. Therefore, for
those wonderful people wanting a kitten or cat in their
lives, Freeway would like everyone to consider adopting
on her behalf. Visit the CAAWS website, as well as
other local groups, to see these friendly homeless cats
& kittens waiting for forever homes. Visit PetSmart on
Saturdays to see these wonderful cats and kittens in
person. CAAWS adopts at PetSmart on Airline, although
adoptions by other groups occur at the Siegen Lane
location also. |
| The number one reason for abandoning
a pet, or a litter, is overpopulation. Through no fault
of the animal, these animals, some tiny puppies and
kittens, are discarded, left to die of slow starvation
and dehydration. These are socialized animals,
unskilled at hunting, unable to survive without food and
water. Please, everyone, spay/neuter your pets and
encourage your neighbors/friends/relatives/coworkers to
do the same. If you have strays/ferals living in your
neighborhoods, CAAWS, Cat Haven and Spay B.R. have
programs to help get these spayed/neutered. |

Update on Freeway |
August 13, 2008
New Miss Bridget video on
YouTubeMiss Bridget has made a full recovery and
has been released from the care of the orthopedic dept.
at LSU Small Animal Clinic. After 4 weeks of crate
rest, she was ready to explore and hasn't stopped
running. She and her buddy "Raisin"
who kept her company during the past 4 wks, are together
constantly, and can be seen in the YouTube link:
Both are available for adoption and would love to
be adopted together. They have been spayed and
neutered. Applications will be taken Saturday,
Aug. 16, at PetSmart on Airline Hwy
(Click for directions). |

Miss Bridget had her final check-up and
x-rays at LSU this morning and she is completely
healed. We're making a slow transition of being crated
to being loose in the house. She is loving her
"freedom." Also, Miss Bridget will be spayed tomorrow
and should be ready for adoption on Aug.16. I'll have
more info and photos tomorrow or Friday.

Miss Bridget is coming along fine. Only 9 more days of
confinement before another LSU Small Animal Clinic
visit. We're keeping our fingers crossed that
everything has healed well.
Miss Bridget really wants to run and play with my other
cats, especially her buddy, Raisin, my foster kitten.
The "between the bars of the cage playing" is no longer
satisfying her urge to play. A few times each day, I
will take her out, bundle her in a blanket, and cuddle
her, giving her plenty of head scratching and ear
rubbing. She is a very sweet kitten.

Update on the 'bridge kitten,' by Pam
Leavy
Bridge Kitty "Freeway" was seen by an orthopedic
veterinarian at LSU Small Animal Clinic on Monday
evening, where the vet reviewed Freeway's x-rays. He
determined that more x-rays would be necessary to make
sure there were no changes with the bone placement. I
brought Freeway back to LSU Small Animal Clinic early
Tuesday morning where she was sedated to complete the
x-rays.
The
final diagnosis is that surgery might do farther injury
to the broken bone, which involves the growth plate.
Because of the location of the break, splinting is not
possible. Freeway is on 'crate rest' for another 3
weeks, keeping her as immobile as is possible with an 8
weeks old kitten who wants to play.
She is also on pain meds for a few days. She will
return to LSU for additional x-rays in 3 weeks.
I have a 5 week old bottle fed kitten, Raisin, who
is Freeway's companion, her buddy. Although Raisin
isn't allowed in the crate with her, they do visit,
play, and sleep together, divided by the bars of the
crate. Freeway has a long road ahead of her, but she is
a champ and is accepting every challenge she is given.
Thanks
to all who have written, emailed and called with concern
for her. Please remember that Freeway represents only
one of many pets who are discarded along roadways. Pet
abandonment and cruelty is illegal. Anyone witnessing
such an event should contact animal control or sheriff's
dept. with vehicle identification and an address of
where the pet was dumped.

Freeway remains stable, immobilized in a small kennel. She will be visiting a
bone specialist at LSU Small Animal Clinic on Monday or Tuesday. Freeway is a
very friendly kitten, showing no signs of aggression, never attempting to bite
or scratch, even when in horrible pain after her leg was broken. Very creative
name suggestions continue to arrive. Freeway remains stable over the
weekend, becoming more friendly, less frightened, and is
wanting to play. |
|
July 11, 2008:
As we continue to receive public support and concern for Freeway's well-being,
Freeway visited another veterinarian (Dr. Mooney) who X-rayed her, confirming
that the bone had not shifted.
Again, splinting could not be done due to the
area of the break as well as the size of the tiny, nearly 2 lb. kitten. It was
decided that a bone specialist at LSU should be consulted for splinting, if
surgery was not advised. Freeway is becoming much more trusting and wants out
of her crate. She has been moved into an equally small, but open wire kennel so
that she can see what's going on around her. |
|
July 10, 2008:
Freeway's X-rays were examined by another veterinarian who did a home visit. She
suggested another X-ray to assure that the bone had not shifted. Freeway finally
is greeting us at the crate door, rather than hiding at the back. She even made
tiny purrs. |
|
July 9, 2008:
Due to the number of recent animal cruelty cases in the Baton Rouge area, local
television stations and The Advocate were interested in covering the story. We
are overwhelmed by the generosity and concern by everyone. Pledges for donations
for the Freeway's medical expenses began to arrive by phone and email, as well
as name suggestions. Continue to send these name suggestions. Many offers to
adopt Freeway are arriving, however, until she is completely healed, she will
not be available for adoption. Continue to consult the CAAWS website for
updated information on her progress. No information was provided on the person
responsible for tossing this tiny kitten from the truck window. Freeway is
responding to attention and kind voices. She meows in response to other cats. |

July 8, 2008:
On Tuesday evening, around 6:00 p.m., Pam Bradley of
Lafayette was crossing the I-10 Mississippi River Bridge
in congested, slow moving traffic, when she witnessed a
kitten, approx 6-7 weeks old, being hurled from a
pick-up truck at the top of the bridge. She immediately
exited her car, along with the driver of another
vehicle.
Stopping traffic, they chased the kitten who was running
under cars, trying to hide. Eventually, they cornered
the terrified kitten who was hiding on top of the tire
of a car. Pam Bradley contacted Pam Leavy of CAAWS, who
took the kitten, who was temporarily named "Freeway."
Pam immediately noticed a problem with Freeway's leg,
which was twisted at an awkward angle, and took her to
an emergency animal clinic where X-rays confirmed a
broken back leg, which mostly likely occurred on impact
when her body hit the bridge surface.
Upon
first examination, the veterinarian suggested surgery,
requiring pins, for an estimated $1,000. Being a non
profit organization, with limited funding, CAAWS must
take careful consideration of large expenditures on one
animal, when so many are in need. The veterinarian was
able to realign the bone and suggested that the bone
could possibly grow back on it's own, prescribing pain
medicine for the next 7 days. The break is in a
difficult area to splint , so Freeway was immobilized in
a carry crate, with room only for a small litter box,
food/water and a bed. As is expected, Freeway is
terrified and remains hidden in the crate. She is
underweight, but eating well.
An immediate appeal went out, with a reward, to anyone
providing information leading to the arrest and
prosecution of the person responsible for this inhumane
act. The initial reward consisted of donations by CAAWS
board members as well as donors from England. |
